A Brighton under-14 team that did not win a match last season has staged a remarkable form turn around to win the 2022-23 premiership in emphatic style.
Brighton's Under-14 Division 2 Gold side defeated Goodwood in the premiership decider at Goodwood Oval last Friday to secure the Bombers' only flag this season.
Batting first, the boys reached 8/148 from their 45 overs on week one, thanks to impressive knocks by Brody Badenoch (36 not out), Lachlan Diercks (24) and Connor Wolfenden (23).
Skippered by Oliver Spence, the team backed it up on week two with an equally impressive bowling and fielding performance to dismiss Goodwood for 98 runs and seal the 50-run win.
Lachlan Diercks was the star of the show, taking two catches and 5/14 with his right-arm medium pace. Leg-spinner Aidan Fitzgerald chimed in with 2/5 and two catches while wicketkeeper Jacob Talbot was brilliant behind the stumps with two dismissals including the winning catch off the bowling of Ewan McAssey.
The win capped off a rags-to-riches fairytale for the side.
Again under the guidance of coach Alan Greaney, the team comprised of several of the same players that struggled in the grade last year. But with another season under their belts and the addition of a number of up and comers, the side gelled brilliantly this year and improved out of site to rocket to the top of the ladder.
The winning team was (in batting order):
JacobTalbot (WK), Lachlan Diercks, Owen Thomas, Connor Wolfenden, Oliver Spence (C), Liam Geoghegan, Brody Badenoch, Aidan Fitzgerald, Ewan McAssey, Anthony Coffey-Greaney, Luca Piovesan, Mitchell Gibson.
Coaches: Alan Greaney, Andrew Spence
Fantastic achievement lads!
