Seniors off to a smashing start

All four Brighton senior sides kicked off the season with impressive wins last Saturday.

The A grade led the way with a big outright win over Port District to sit atop the A1 ladder after the opening round.

Bowling first, Matt McInerney's men rolled Port for 158 with Keiran Thornton leading the way with 3/32.

The boys then got on a roll to be 1/206 at stumps thanks to a debut century from Jake Hartigan (103 not out) who enjoyed a 132-run opening stand with Joe Hack (71).

On week two, we declared immediately and bowled Port out for 124 with Thornton again leading the way with 3/41 while McInerney chipped in with 3/10.

Set just 76 for the outright win, we cruised to 1/80 in less than 15 overs to claim maximum points.

The B grade faced a much fiercer battle against Walkerville in B1. After being 9/149 late on day one, captain Charlie Sutton declared, with the bold plan yielding one wicket late in the day.

Walkerville resumed on 1/26 on the second day and appeared to be cruising to victory at 4/110 before James Reid (4/24) and James Mifsud (4/34) instigated a batting collapse that saw the visitors bundled out for 133.

It was a similar case in the C grade with Brighton posting 141 against Glenunga, led by skipper Simon Rice who top scored with 53.

The visitors quickly put on 32 for the first wicket before a collapse saw them limp to 6/46 at stumps thanks to a sensational spell by 17-year-old Brighton debutant Henry Savage, who took 4/6 on day one.

Glenunga was bowled out for 88 on day two with Savage finishing with 5/15 and Tom Shearing taking 3/20.

Teenager Max Greenslade (33) top scored in the second innings as the B2 side hunted quick runs before declaring on 7/89 to set up a tantalising run chase for Glenunga.

The visitors took the bait and came out swinging in pursuit of the points, losing wickets on the way.

Brighton needed just one wicket for the outright win with three overs remaining but couldn't quite get there as Glenunga fell 22 runs short of the target. Shearing bowled well again in the second innings, taking 4/33.

The one day side made and excellent start to its LO6 campaign with a win over Flinders Uni.

Vivek Krishnamoorthy took an amazing 6/24 and will be on a hat-trick when he starts his spell this week as Flinders was dismissed in the 40th over for 160.

Dean Chambers signalled his intentions for another good season, top scoring with 62 as the Bombers passed the total six down with an over to spare.

Well played all, let's keep the juggernaut rolling!
